Hair Replacement Wig
Wigs may serve Areata patients in very different ways. Whether as a full wig or as a hairpiece, hair replacement is the alternative for the patient when prescribed therapies have proved to be unsuccessful. The use of hairpieces should be given much consideration in the case of Alopecia Areata.
As you know, the essence of Alopecia Areata is that one or more lesions can develop. Due to the fact that hair parts do not regrow after progressive hair loss, it is likely that the patient would have to somehow adapt to this situation after a short while. The result could be a new hairpiece. Regardless of how full wig is made, whether real or artificial hair is used, whether it is machine-made or hand-made, it is crucial to try and achieve likeness to the patient’s original appearance. Care should be taken to ensure the wig’s naturalness, ease of care, as well as comfort while putting the wig on and wearing it. Whether it is a man, a woman or a child – today it is possible for everyone to look as if you never lost your hair. The new generation of wigs does everything. Customized products are precisely adapted to your own head size. Showers, going to the sauna or simply sleeping with it are now a matter of course.
For patients with larger bald spots on the head, there is a novel hair system that consists of a textile hair piece (toupee). Fixation points are used to connect the hair piece (toupee) and the person’s natural hair together. The attachment is safe, pleasant and invisible. This procedure can be applied to all forms of alopecia if at least 75% of the anagen hair* is detected in the attachment area in the trichogram. The repetition of the attachment depends on the speed of growth of one’s own hair (usually 4-6 weeks). The assumption of costs takes place according to guidelines § 182/1 RVO.
In the meantime, eyebrows and beards replacements are also present on the market in all forms, however these are no longer considered as just “camouflage”. In the cases of Alopecia Areata, wigs are considered as medical aids and are to be reimbursed as such in standard versions, usually by health insurance companies. Unfortunately, there are a lot of new requirements in this area due to the constantly changing legislation. The need for buying a hair replacement must be recertified each time by a general practitioner (GP), dermatologist, gynecologist or neurologist, since these are individual, case-by-case decisions. For this reason, the subsidies of the individual health insurance companies are different. In some cases, a certificate and a cost estimate are not enough. Sometimes a personal conversation with the responsible clerk of your health insurance may be advisable. To most health insurance companies, Alopecia Areata is not even known, so rejections are quite common, because the insurance experts suspect you are only looking for a cosmetic embellishment.
Should you be rejected a free hair replacement or wig, please submit an objection within the deadline. The objection should include: … an appeal requesting a review by the medical service. … “Recent reports and decisions can be found in our AAD magazine.
